Where to Connect your Laptop

What are the Network Access Modules?

Network Access Modules (NAM), sometimes also referred to as Network Access Ports, provide an alternative to computer labs for students who own a laptop computer by providing network access in convenient locations. General campus DHCP NAM locations include the Memorial Union, Shields library, the Health Sciences library, the Physical Sciences library and Wellman Hall.

Many campus NAMs are near a desk to allow users to connect to the Internet using their own laptop computer. Look around for this DHCP indicator label for a NAM you can use:

What do I need to use the Network Access Modules?

In order to use the campus DHCP NAMs, you will need the following:
  1. Laptop Computer - A Macintosh or PC-compatible computer is required to connect to the DHCP Nams.
  2. 10-Base-T Cable - A 10-Base-T cable is a network cable which looks similar to a telephone cable. 10-Base-T cables can be purchased at the UCD Bookstore located in the Memorial Union.

  3. Ethernet Adapter - Your laptop computer needs an ethernet adapter in order to connect to the DHCP Nams. Some computers have an ethernet adapter built-in, while other computers may require a PCMCIA Ethernet card or other hardware attachment. Please consult your computer's documentation or manufacturer for more information.

Where can I find the Network Access Modules?

  • In Public-Use Classrooms - Check the list of public-use classrooms for being DHCP-enabled.
  • Memorial Union - Look around for DHCP-enabled NAMs.
  • Health Sciences and Physical Sciences Libraries - Look around for DHCP-enabled NAMs.
  • Shields Library - Near 1st floor Information Desk and some additional locations. There are several DHCP NAMs located past the Information Desk on the 1st floor of the Shields Library. Ethernet cables and cards may be checked out from the 1st floor Information Desk for use with the Library NAMs only.
